ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT IN OUR DEMOCRACY MATTERS

Events with Commit To Democracy, formerly known as Commit To Flip Blue, are organized to facilitate the active participation of volunteers in the political process.  Our events offer training, solid information on the goal of our work, and follow up from Trainers/Organizers to support and inspire ongoing regular volunteering.  We believe that being an active citizen requires consistent involvement in our democracy.  We strive to find the best and most effective means to work to expand the Democratic majority, support the Biden/Harris legislative agenda, and increase the involvement of a diverse community of voters.  We need you to be successful!  We need you to continue the hard work to heal and advance our Democracy!

    Working America - CA 21

Volunteer to Help Flip the CA-21

Commit to Flip Blue is partnering with Working America to flip California’s 21st congressional district.  CA-21 is in the San Joaquin Valley, the southern half of California’s Central Valley.  The
district includes all of Kings County, and portions of Fresno County, Tulare County,
and Kern County.  It is one of the largest congressional districts in the state.
Approximately 700,000 people live and work in the district.

    By the Numbers:        through 1/24/2018

Shifts:                         1063 (298 of which were volunteer shifts)

    Knocks:                      51,060

    Conversations:            28,380

    Members:                   19,859

    Actions taken:             12,923

Our most recent staff canvass in CD 21 (Mendota) netted amazing results:  195 convos and 186 joined last Friday 1/19.  CD 21 is receptive to our canvass!

On February 24, we’re organizing a canvass in Coalinga (it’s the closest spot to the Bay Area and quite reachable for folks in the South Bay).  Will you join us?

Here’s the skinny on travel time and there’s even places to stay à https://www.kayak.com/hotels/Coalinga,CA-c19130/2018-02-23/2018-02-24/2adults?sort=rank_a – but you can share driving and make it back and forth in a day.

    • 2 ¾ hours from Oakland
    • 2 ¾ hours from San Jose
    • 2 hours 50 minutes from downtown San Francisco

The travel time is shorter for our volunteers in Salinas or Monterey area because they can head south on Hwy 101:

    • 1 hour 50 minutes from the Labor Council office in Salinas (Monterey-Santa Cruz LC)
    • 2 hours 13 minutes from Watsonville

Sign up online for any of our canvases (CD 10 or CD 21) à https://www.workingamerica.org/centralvalley/volunteer .

And you can sign up directly for the Coalinga canvass here  à https://actionnetwork.org/events/volunteer-with-working-america-cd-21

    Our impact

Amazing Democratic momentum! Even with Republican Estes’s win #KS04 in the special election over Democrat #JamesThompson, Estes's lead was less than 6 points (with 94% of the vote in). Trump had won the district by 27 points and Pompeo won his seat by more than 31 points.

Thanks to James Thompson and to all our volunteers who hosted and made calls into this race, even though all the odds were against us. It took Trump, Mike Pence and Ted Cruz personally intervening in this race to beat us, and Democrats across the country should learn from and be inspired by the fight everyone put up.

If you would like to help, whether by hosting phone banks, reaching out to other groups, writing blogs, or offering any suggestions, please feel free to respond to this email or email us at [email protected].  All suggestions are most welcome!

    Upcoming Events

On Tuesday, April 18th, there will be a special election in Georgia CD6 to fill the seat vacated by Tom Price, who became the Secretary of Health and Human Services. This election is open to candidates from all parties. If no one secures 50% of the vote, a runoff between the top two vote-getters will occur on June 20th.

Jon Ossoff has emerged as the leading Democratic candidate.  Once represented by Newt Gingrich and solidly Republican, the district was one where Hillary lost by only 1.5% in November. It's one of the best near-term opportunities for a Democratic pickup anywhere in the country. And, as the special election nears, Jon's momentum is steadily rising.

Join us at the following phone banks from now through April 18th and make a difference in this important race! Please bring a cell phone and laptop/tablet.
