Join our Commit To Democracy Book Club where we will read political books that can aid us in our organizing. Let’s meet informally, get to know one another, and share our political passion in a short discussion of the book.
This month’s book is Surviving Autocracy by Masha Gessen. We have a few other options for you in addition to reading this book. You can watch Masha Gessen discuss the book at the Commonwealth Club of California on Youtube, here. Or, you can listen to a New Yorker podcast with Masha Gessen, here.
This book does a great job of putting into context what we all went through the last four years, how it happened, why we can never let this happen again, and what we can do about it. I appreciated how she puts the entire 4 years into some kind of narrative that makes sense of what I was feeling as I lived through it. I found the book both fascinating and cathartic. After reading this book, passing the For the People Act is the most important thing we can do to establish a foundation for protecting our Democracy in a legal way and not relying on “goodwill” or “tradition.” Standard agreements based, on “what we’ve always done,” and not on laws do not work in the face of an autocrat. I hope you will join the CTD Book Club to discuss this book on July 21st.
